Lewis R. French on Flickr.
The Lewis R. French is certainly one of my favorite schooners of the Maine Windjammer Fleet. Having been first launched in 1871, she’s seen quite a bit of travel. On days like the one where I took this photo, it really is a treat to watch one of the schooners sail past. The French having no engine on board, you only hear the wind in the sails and the ocean against the hull. I find it very amusing how on a proper, windy day these one hundred, one hundred fifty year old ships will blow past many of the modern power boats and leave them eating wake.

I know all the reasons why we don’t use sail power anymore, but nothing will ever look quite like a ship in full sail...
