Just another day in Iceland. As always, lots of leftovers from past volcanic activity. The Dyrhólaey peninsula was mostly closed to protect the nesting birds but the parking lot area still had some impressive views.

Atop the Glacier on Flickr.

Meet the photographer. Don’t let the ruggedness fool you, I clean up rather nicely. My father and I made a short hike up a glacier. Probably not the smartest thing since we had no guide or proper gear, but we’re crazy like that.

High Ground on Flickr.

The town of Vík is a precarious place to live. High above the town is the Kalta volcano, buried beneath the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Should the volcano erupt, which it is known to do, enough ice could be melted that would trigger an enormous flash flood, potentially large enough to obliterate the entire town and wash it into the Atlantic. The church is believed to be the only building that would survive such a flood as it is high atop a hill.

What a beautiful day for a sunburn. I got invited to visit Wave Hill last weekend. Got a lovely tour of the grounds and the gallery exhibit currently running. I definitely recommend a visit. They’ve got a lot of cool summer programs that I would go to, except getting to there from Long Island takes a fair amount of time.

Who wants to go for a swim? Be warned though, it’s a tad hot. Ok, so it’s literally boiling water coming out of the ground. It looks pretty though.

New Paint Job on Flickr.

Reykjavik has quite the bustling harbor. Coast Guard ships, research vessels, whale watching boats, and a few large ships in dry dock getting a paint job. I think the stern of the ship could use it more than the bit that’s going to be underwater.

Instead of it being a single mountain like many would think, Esja is actually a volcanic mountain range. Seen from across the harbor in Reykjavik, Iceland. Also, I’m on holiday in Iceland.

Intrigued on Flickr.

There’s some new art on the High Line. Brooklyn-based artist Carol Bove was specially commissioned by Friends of the High Line to create Caterpillar, an installation of seven sculptures dotted around the landscape on the High Line at the Rail Yards. Now through May 2014, you can reserve free tickets for public walks.

Unlike most art installations that I’ve visited, Bove leaves the viewer to their own devices in understanding and interpreting the art, giving them with no information or background about the individual pieces. I don’t think they even have names. It will be interesting to see how the wild plants grown up and around the art as the seasons progress.

Well Hole on Flickr.

The Callahan Mine was a zinc/copper mine that was shut down and abandoned in the 1972. Not much of it remains, especially since the open pit is now the tidal lake you see in the photo here. The EPA finally came in last year and started clearing out all the contamination. Unfortunately, that also means they’ve put fences up so I can’t go galavanting around the mine on my ATV anymore.

I probably shouldn’t spend as much time here as I do considering the dangerous levels of PCB’s, lead, and arsenic which the EPA has deemed unsafe for even occasional human contact. Oops.

Here’s a Maine shot. This is a bit old, but I finally got around to processing it. I felt like I needed something to break up all the High Line photos. I’ve got another big batch of them to edit from yesterday so some variety is nice.

I’m very much not a video person. I’ve never really had any desire to get into the art form. This however, is some different. Taking a photo is not always enough to capture the movement and energy in a scene that I want to. This is where the video mode on my camera comes in. It allows me to capture 5-10 second clips of life’s flow. Expect to be seeing more of these short clips in the future.

It’s a sunny day today but we’ve had lots of rain the last two days. Having some English heritage in me, I love the rain (as it happens to rain frequently in England) and I love shooting in it. Just be sure to have a towel ready when you finally get back inside.
