Just another day in Iceland. As always, lots of leftovers from past volcanic activity. The Dyrhólaey peninsula was mostly closed to protect the nesting birds but the parking lot area still had some impressive views.

Meet the photographer. Don’t let the ruggedness fool you, I clean up rather nicely. My father and I made a short hike up a glacier. Probably not the smartest thing since we had no guide or proper gear, but we’re crazy like that.

High Ground on Flickr.
The town of Vík is a precarious place to live. High above the town is the Kalta volcano, buried beneath the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Should the volcano erupt, which it is known to do, enough ice could be melted that would trigger an enormous flash flood, potentially large enough to obliterate the entire town and wash it into the Atlantic. The church is believed to be the only building that would survive such a flood as it is high atop a hill.

What a beautiful day for a sunburn. I got invited to visit Wave Hill last weekend. Got a lovely tour of the grounds and the gallery exhibit currently running. I definitely recommend a visit. They’ve got a lot of cool summer programs that I would go to, except getting to there from Long Island takes a fair amount of time.

Reykjavik has quite the bustling harbor. Coast Guard ships, research vessels, whale watching boats, and a few large ships in dry dock getting a paint job. I think the stern of the ship could use it more than the bit that’s going to be underwater.

There’s some new art on the High Line. Brooklyn-based artist Carol Bove was specially commissioned by Friends of the High Line to create Caterpillar, an installation of seven sculptures dotted around the landscape on the High Line at the Rail Yards. Now through May 2014, you can reserve free tickets for public walks.
Unlike most art installations that I’ve visited, Bove leaves the viewer to their own devices in understanding and interpreting the art, giving them with no information or background about the individual pieces. I don’t think they even have names. It will be interesting to see how the wild plants grown up and around the art as the seasons progress.
